Stuff upcoming and present...and your horoscope!

Begroeting from Amsterdam, Netherlands!
I’m here doing a teacher training in Kaiut Yoga with my friend Bonnie, who introduced me to this form of self exploration and healing. It has been life-changing, and special to be here learning from Francisco Kaiut, the technique’s founder.

Many of the buildings here have a slight lean - in all different directions. But somehow they stand, stable. “Because they’re all together,” said Bonnie on a morning walk to class the other day. That’s a metaphor if I ever heard one, and I wrote a blog.

Other Learning

Otter continuing education: I am also pleased to be enrolled in a two-year certificate program called Karuna Training, which was developed out of Naropa University in Colorado. ‘Karuna’ translates to ‘compassion’ and is a therapy technique rooted in Buddhist psychology.

Yoga Classes

Thursday Restorative Yoga classes will start again after I get back from Amsterdam, the first one being Thursday, June 20th at the Palisades Recreation Center at 6:30 p.m.

Yoga at the Arts Club of Washington will also start up again. Dates and times will be determined soon.

I will be adding new weekly classes as well, with the goal of a morning class and an additional evening class. I will keep a calendar updated online, and summer and fall schedules should be solidified by the end of this month.

FABUM Sound Bath at Smith Center for Healing and the Arts

Good Vibrations: our dynamic little ‘moment-making’ non-profit FABUM presents a Sound Bath with Crystal Ashram at the Smith Center for Healing Arts (1632 U Street NW, Washington, DC) on Thursday, July 11th at 6:30 p.m. for an enchanting evening of restoration and inspiration. Come relax and enjoy this uniquely designed sound and meditation program, as we allow the ancient frequencies from a variety of ancient Tibetan singing bowls to wash over us and nourish mind, body and spirit. Event is free; RSVP required - please click here. If you haven’t attended one before, this is a great opportunity and I would love to see you. Please get there early to park and find a good place to sit or lie down inside!

DTSBDC at the Arts Club

I’m looking forward to a special program featuring Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company at the Arts Club of Washington (2017 I “Eye” Street NW) which will take place on Friday, July 12th starting at 6:30 p.m.  This will be a fun evening featuring special performance excerpts from the company’s repertoire that celebrate the musical era of Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday. Email me with any questions. Dana is the Smithsonian’s first ever choreographer in residence, based at the National Portrait Gallery.
Cocktails and program only: $20; program and dinner: $60. You can RSVP to administrator@artsclubofwashington.org.

Other Dance News

Last month, DTSBDC performed Dana’s “Tracings” to standing ovations at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. This piece tells the story of his family’s immigrationto Hawaii from Korea, and was originally commissioned by the Kennedy Center in 2003. The reprisal on May 4th featured an appearance by his mother, visual artist Anna Kang Burgess, who came to DC for the first time since the original premiere. While here, she also gave an interview to the American History Museum, and spoke about working on a pineapple plantation as a child growing up in Honolulu. The performance and her visit were full of magical moments.
